Rochester NOW Denounces Roberts Confirmation; Critical
Next Supreme Court Nominee Supports Women's Rights
September 29, 2005
Rochester NOW is proud that Senators Clinton and
Schumer were among the 22 senators who stood up for women's rights
when it mattered and voted against the confirmation of John Roberts
for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, 78 other
senators voted for Roberts who, during his confirmation hearings,
evaded questions about his qualifications and judicial philosophy.
"The Supreme Court will hear cases involving
women's reproductive rights, privacy issues, equal education
opportunities, and other issues that are critical to women's rights
and civil rights," said Alberta Roesser, President of Rochester NOW.
"We can not lose these rights to an anti-woman court."
"It is more important than ever that the next
nominee for the Supreme Court be someone who understands how critical
these rights are to women. We can not have a nominee that will
dismantle our fundamental rights," said Roesser.
