The recent articles in the Democrat and Chronicle (August 24 & 25,
2005) on the report of violence against women in the Northeast section
of the city are prompting this letter. When is violence against women
going to be a priority in the community? The lack of a timely alert
says to us that women are still thought of second-class citizens.
I am still amazed it took seven crimes in close proximity to alert
people in that area. Why did the women of this area have to rely on
rumors rather than an alert from the Rochester Police Department? This
screams gender, racial, and class prejudice. This must stop.
As citizens we should demand the department chiefs be held
accountable and an investigation should be held looking into gender
bias.
A world where violence against women and children is tolerated by
simply giving the issue such little attention shows we are going
backward. In the 21st century it should be taken for granted that all
citizens are protected equally.
