Keep Our Doctors Safe

October 21, 1999

"It is vital that we keep our doctors who provide abortions and the staff who work with them safe. A year ago Saturday, Dr. Barnett Slepian was murdered in his own home in Buffalo. His death is a grim reminder that abortion providers are targets of the terrorist fringe of the anti-abortion movement." stated Marsha Peone, Rochester NOW Reproductive Rights Task Force Chair.

Four other abortion providers in western New York and Canada have been shot at around November 11, Canada's Remembrance Day. Anti-abortion activists in Canada have used the date to "remember the unborn children."

Since 1993 eight people who work to keep abortions safe and legal have been murdered. Sixteen have been wounded in anti-abortion attacks in the last five years.

James Kopp, who has been charged with Dr. Slepian's murder, is still at large.

"No one should be subjected to the death threats and harassment that our doctors live with every day," stated Peone. "Disagreements over abortion should be voiced through peaceful demonstrations, not with a high power rifle."

Peone praised local doctors and staff who provide abortion services. "Rochester NOW especially wants to thank Dr. Morris Wortman and Dr. Eric Schaff for their courage in speaking out against the anti-abortion terrorists," she said. "They and their staff are to be commended for literally putting their lives on the line every day in order for women - not the government and certainly not militant religious zealots - to decide when to have a child."
