Rochester NOW Political Action
Committee Endorses
Johnson for County Exec
October 9, 2003
Today the
Rochester Chapter of the National Organization for Women made a
critical decision to endorse Mayor William A. Johnson Jr. in the race
for Monroe County Executive. Against the backdrop of the Susan B.
Anthony House members of Rochester NOW announced that Bill Johnson is
the best choice to lead this County into the future.
PAC chair Kathy Sweetland said, "This is a very significant
endorsement. It is fitting that we hold this news conference at the
site of Susan B. Anthony's home. She is a model of progressive
leadership for women and all members of this community and the
nation. Bill Johnson's leadership credentials, integrity, and
experience will restore good government to this County. Throughout
his career of distinguished service to the needs of his constituents,
Bill Johnson has demonstrated a willingness to community honestly and
effectively with the community."
Rochester NOW president Marsha Peone
added, "Some might ask why Rochester NOW did not endorse the female
candidate in the race for County Executive. We believe that Bill
Johnson's commitment to the wellbeing of women and children, the
achievement of economic and political equality for all, as well as
access to affordable day care make him an outstanding candidate."
Mayor Johnson said that, "I am humbled and honored by the vote of
confidence that the National Organization for Women has given me. I
do believe Monroe County is headed in the wrong direction. We need a
different style of leadership---one that is visionary, inclusive and
adaptable. I believe by expanding our vision and working together, we
can truly make Monroe County the center of a regional renaissance and
a place Susan B. Anthony would be proud to call home."
